![]() During the summer, there is always the threat for thunderstorms with hail and lightening. In the higher elevations, melting snow or ice could make portions of the trail slippery. These areas could be quite muddy during snowmelt periods. There is a small stream that runs through a portion of the trail and also a small pond. As temperatures warm, snowmelt can increase muddy patches throughout the lower elevations of the trail, particularly through meadows. During the winter, the surrounding area receives a significant amount of snowfall. The conditions of the trail will vary on the time of the year. At that time there hadn’t been any snowfall accumulation but there were still pockets of ice along the higher elevations. The ridgeline at the very top of Clouds Rest is very narrow and a fall off the side will likely result in death. Use caution when along the upper portion of the trail if there is snow or ice. The earlier the time of year, the more snowpack there will be along the trail. ![]() Depending on the Seirra snowpack, snow and Ice will still remain along some parts of the trail. Late spring through early fall is the best time of year to hike to the peak of Clouds Rest. That being said, winter is the worst time to try to attempt this hike. That means you can’t get to the trailhead when this road is closed. Starting through around the middle of October(sometimes earlier) to the end of May or early June the road is not passable. This road cuts through the Sierra Nevada but because of the elevations, this road closes after the first major snowfalls of the year. The top of Clouds Rest is a perfect place to have a picnic while admiring the beauty of Yosemite National Park. One wrong move could mean a fall to a few thousand feet to the canyons below. This ridge can bring jitters to those afraid of heights. One of my favorite things about Clouds Rest is as the trail nears the peak, there is a slim ridge line up to the top. From Clouds rest, hikers climbing up Half Dome can be seen. ![]() The peak of Clouds Rest is actually at higher elevation and looks down on Half Dome. One of the most notable things about the peak of Clouds Rest is how it sits directly above Half Dome. The shores of the lake are also lined with crystal clear blue water and white sand. During a calm morning or evening, the glass-like water paints a mirror image of the surrounding mountains and forest. The trailhead begins near Tenaya Lake, which is an impressive view itself. There are a few different ways to get to Clouds Rest but for the sake of this trail, I will be focusing on how to get to Clouds Rest via Tenaya Lake. The peak doesn’t get quite the same reputation as Half Dome, but the perks are less crowds, no permits, and equally incredible views. The peak gets light to moderate traffic due to it’s distance away from the Yosemite Valley floor but the views from atop are some of the best in the park. Clouds Rest is a great day hike for those looking to avoid the crowds of the busy Yosemite Valley and be rewarded with equally stunning – if not better views of Yosemite National Park.Ĭlouds Rest is a large granite peak within Yosemite National Park. The peak of Clouds Rest towers above the ever so popular Half Dome but has equally as stunning views of the surrounding Yosemite Valley and Sierra Nevada Mountain Ranges.
